Welcome to The Rooftops!

The Rooftops is a recs community for speculative short fiction! You can rec any story under 25,000 words that has a strong speculative component. Speculative means the story explores a reality different from our own in some crucial way; this includes science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, alternate history, slipstream, etc. There is no requirement for pro publishing; works that are self-published online are fine, and so is fanfiction as long as it has a speculative focus. Stories do not need to have been published recently.

Note that this is a recs community, not a review community. We're here to find the good stuff--we want to hear about stories you wholeheartedly loved! If your recommendation comes with substantial caveats, this isn't a good place for it. We also want to keep the comments generally positive, so if you didn't enjoy a story someone else recced, you don't need to respond. However, it is okay to comment on other people's recs about problematic elements in the story relating to issues like representation and bias.

Please be aware that this is not a locked community and our associated Twitter account may tag the authors of the stories recced here. We will try not to tag if a story's author is known to avoid reader responses, or if there is discussion of problematic content in the comments to the rec post, but all posts and comments are public and may be seen by anyone.

Posting Guidelines

Ready to tell us about a story? We can't wait! Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. The story title and author should be in your subject line.

2. If the story is available online, please include the link in the post. If it's part of a collection, anthology, or other publication that is not available online, be sure to say where it can be found.

3. If any of the following content notes apply to the story, include them at the top of the post under a cut (more info on cuts here). You can include relevant details (e.g. "anti-Black racism" or "transphobia with satisfying comeuppance") and additional content notes if there are other things in the story that you think people might want to know about. If someone asks you to edit your post to add a content note, please do so. If you would like a content note added to this list, please contact the mods.

Character death
Suicide
Abuse
Sexual abuse
Racism
Misogyny
Homophobia/queerphobia
Transphobia
Fatphobia
Graphic violence
Child harm
Animal harm
Vomit
Pregnancy
Body horror

4. Your rec generally does not need to be under a cut, but please do cut for any spoilers or if the rec itself requires content notes.

5. Please tag with the author name, genre/s, and publication (e.g. name of magazine, anthology title). [Edit: apparently only admins can add tags. I've contacted Dreamwidth support about this; in the meantime I'll add tags myself.]

Thanks for reading! Now go forth and shout from you-know-where about your favorite stories!

Thanks!

As a member of the comm I'm not allowed to add new tags so I was not able to add "nature," "science fiction," and "marissa lingen" to my most recent post. Any way to modify that?
